High-Altitude Mendoza Wine Trail: Uco Valley & Andes Passes

Departing Mendoza city brings you south onto the scenic paved bends of Route 40, entering the high-altitude Uco Valley. Sitting at 1,100 meters in the direct rain-shadow of the Andes, the valley is a spectacular, sun-drenched wine oasis. Here, massive, avant-garde concrete wineries (like Zuccardi) are nestled among the vine rows, designed to blend with the grey mountain stones. Tasting the estate's signature, complex Malbecs—crafted from grapes grown in mineral-rich limestone soils—is a deeply elegant experience, with the massive, snow-capped wall of the Andes mountain range rising vertically behind the green vine rows.

Driving northwest from the vineyards brings you onto the scenic paved bends of Route 7, climbing steeply into the high, red-rock gorges of the Andes to enter Uspallata. This is a spectacular historic valley that once served as a filming location for Brad Pitt's *Seven Years in Tibet* due to its dry, high-country alpine look. Continuing up the pass leads to the Mount Aconcagua Viewpoint. Standing at the park edge, you are confronted by a breathtaking sight: the colossal, snow-capped south face of Mount Aconcagua rising vertically 6,961 meters into the sky—the tallest mountain in the world outside of Asia, a place of immense scale and mountain majesty.
