The Southern Scenic Route: Wild Coastlines & Fiords

Entering The Catlins is like stepping back in time to a prehistoric, windswept New Zealand. Here, the native podocarp forest meets a rugged, wave-battered coastline where massive Southern Ocean swells crash into dark stone cliffs. One of the absolute visual crown jewels here is Purakaunui Falls—a spectacular, triple-tiered waterfall nestled inside a lush, green canopy of native beech forest and giant tree ferns. Further down, at Curio Bay, you will stand on a coastal shelf containing the fossilized remains of a 170-million-year-old Jurassic forest, where stone tree trunks and fallen logs are clearly visible embedded in the rock. Curio Bay is also a sanctuary for the rare, yellow-eyed penguin (Hoiho) and a resident pod of Hector's dolphins playing in the surf. At Nugget Point (Tokatā), a dramatic ridge-top trail leads to a historic lighthouse perched high above the cliffs, looking down onto massive, jagged rock stacks ('the nuggets') rising out of the roaring ocean. It is a place of profound coastal energy, raw wildlife, and deep, windswept solitude.

Winding west brings you to Invercargill, New Zealand's southernmost city, famous for its grand Victorian architecture, wide grid streets, and rich vintage transport culture. Just 20 minutes south of the city lies the rugged port town of Bluff, situated at the absolute southern tip of the South Island. Bluff is globally legendary for producing the world’s finest oysters—slow-grown in the cold, deep waters of the Foveaux Strait, resulting in an incredibly rich, creamy, and metallic delicacy. At Stirling Point, you will stand before the iconic yellow international signpost, marking the official end of State Highway 1 and displaying distances to the Equator, London, and the South Pole. Winding up to the Bluff Hill Lookout rewards you with a dizzying, windswept panoramic view looking out over the harbor, the shipping lanes, and across the wild waters toward Stewart Island (Rakiura). It is a classic, salt-crusted maritime port town that captures the authentic, hard-working soul of southern New Zealand.

Turning north brings you inland towards Fiordland, driving along the edge of the mountains to Lake Manapouri. Widely considered the most beautiful of all of New Zealand's alpine lakes, Manapouri is a pristine, deep glacial lake dotted with over 30 small islands and surrounded by the towering, forest-clad peaks of the cathedral range. The atmosphere here is one of profound, untouched silence, away from the bustling tourist crowds. Lake Manapouri serves as the exclusive gateway to Doubtful Sound (Patea)—a massive, silent fjord that is three times longer and ten times larger than Milford Sound! Because there is no road access to Doubtful Sound, reaching it requires a spectacular journey: cruising across the glassy waters of Lake Manapouri, taking a bus over the steep Wilmot mountain pass, and boarding a wilderness cruise through the deep, silent fjord arms. It is a journey into the absolute absolute heart of New Zealand's wilderness, where the only sounds are the wind, roaring waterfalls, and the calls of nesting penguins.
